Theravada Buddhism is the State religion of Sri Lanka practiced by 70.2% of the Sri Lanka’s population. The island has been a center of Buddhist scholarship and learning since the introduction of Buddhism in the third century BCE producing eminent scholars such as Buddhaghosa and preserving the vast Pāli Canon. Throughout most of its history, Sri Lankan kings have played a major role in the maintenance and revival of the Buddhist institutions of the island.

Airport to Colombo

Colombo City

Sri Lanka as a Buddhist Country, Colombo city resembles the busiest town in Sri Lanka. Despite the fact that the city is occupied, yet subsequent to entering to a Temple all of a sudden, your mind will be quiet. It will be infiltrate to your entire personality and naturally you will be gotten away from the fastidious sentiments.

1 Day in Anuradhapura

Heading to Anuradhapura, you will enjoy a city tour of this once royal capital of Ancient Ceylon. A significant location for Buddhist pilgrims, the city of Anuradhapura is a major centre for Theravada Buddhism with well preserved ruins of a number of Buddhist temples, monasteries, statues etc while it covers a land area of over 100 square kilometers. You can also head towards Mihintale which is a mountain closer to the city of Anuradhapura where supposedly Buddhism was inaugurated in SriLanka.

Walk through the ancient ruined city of Anuradhapura, which was the capital for over a millennium until the 10th century AD. View the pagodas, monastic buildings and ponds that are scatter all over the vast area. Visit important landmarks such as Jetavanarama, which was one of the tallest buildings of the ancient world, the Sri Maha Bodhi and the ruins of the huge Abhayagiri Monastery. Gain more knowledge about Sri Lanka’s history as you walk in the footsteps of Kings. On completion return back to your hotel and relax.

Mihintale

Mihintale is a mountain peak near Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka. It is believed by Sri Lankans to be the site of a meeting between the Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiyatissa which inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is now a pilgrimage site, and the site of several religious monuments and abandoned structures

1 Day in Dambulla

Proceeding towards Dambulla, you will visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa which was the capital of Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura. Massive rock sculptures at the Gal Vihara and many more temples will leave you in awe of Sri Lanka. You will also make a pit stop at the caves of the Golden Temple in Dambulla which dates back to many centuries. The ancient murals and the many figurines inside the caves speak volumes of Lord Buddha. You can also climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress if you are up for the challenge to marvel the beauty of the terraced gardens, ponds, paintings and ruins of the palace on top.

Golden Temple of Dambulla

Enter the historic caves of the Golden Temple of Dambulla, dating back to the 1st century BC. View the ancient murals depicting the life story of Lord Gautama Buddha. Look at the hundreds of figurines of Buddha and other deities scattered throughout the five main caves. Visit the Cave of the Divine King, Cave of the Great King and the Great New Monastery. See the giant golden Buddha Statue just a little distance outside the cave complex.

Visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa

Visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, which was the second major capital of Sri Lanka. Walk through the ruins of the city that flourished between the 10th to the 13th century AD. View important monuments such as Gal Vihara, Vatadage, the lotus bath, Lankathilaka Temple and the statue of King Parakramabahu whose reign was considered the golden age of Polonnaruwa. Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Climb the 5th century AD rock fortress, Sigiriya, where the King Kasyapa ruled. Walk through the entrance framed by the paws of a lion that is quite appropriate for its name, ‘ the Lion Rock’. View the beautiful unfading murals that brought Sigiriya its fame. Climb the steep staircase to see the terraced gardens and still-working cisterns. Walk through the tunnels leading to the palace as you get a feel for times long past.

Your final destination will be Kandy which is still famed for its culture and Buddhist background with many devotees still flocking to worship the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. With time in hand, you can also go on a few technical tours to experience the local arts and crafts while enjoy
