Belihuloya City
Belihuloya is well-known for its paradise-like mountains, tea plantations, and powerful waterfalls. Belihuloya is a quiet, cooler, green region in the Rathnapura district of Sri Lanka. It's worth a day trip here, but staying for a few nights allows you to experience everything Belihuloya has to offer. The hills of the Belihuloya area are where you can have breathtaking views.
Belihuloya
The waterfall gushed in mists of white spray as it tumbled off rugged rocks and dropped like an immaculate veil to flow gracefully into the surrounding jungles. Belihuloya, a charming hillside village situated in the Ratnapura District, approximately 160 kilometres from Colombo is nature’s marvel, a miracle of creation blessed with an abundance of waterfalls, streams, nature, cycling trails and numerous opportunities for bird watching and camping.
The Belihuloya River flashes a wonderful spectacle, beginning from Horton Plains, it flows and tumbles downwards into the Samanalawewa Reservoir. An area that has an expansive bio- diversity, Belihuloya embraces that gifted characteristic of semi-evergreen forests, tropical savannah forests, dry montane grasslands and montane temperate forests. Clean and serene, it is swaddled in the drapes of numerous waterfalls, surrounded and wrapped by mountain ranges and peaks from where many waters flow. The tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka, the Bambarakanda Falls, flows from here at a height of 263 metres – the 299th highest waterfall in the world. Standing at 220 meters tall, the Diyaluma Falls with an imposing flow of water is the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. At 60 metres in height the Surathali Falls cascades in three segments and has been christened thus following a movie that was filmed on location.
The Pahanthuda Falls is shaped like an oil lamp; Brampton Falls is set amidst lush tropical jungle and flows to the Walawe River. Be cautious at the Galagama Falls, which is known to be covered with large slippery rocks. Belihuloya is definitely for the plucky traveller, with plenty of places to explore like the Haggala Trail, which is about 2.5 hours away from Belihuloya; and the Appalagala Trail is a 2.5 hour walk through forest and grassland with great opportunities for bird watching. The Samanalawewa Trail is a half day adventure leading to the Samanalawewa Reservoir.
For the history buff, the Kuragala rock cave, dating back to the 2nd century will be a fascinating walk along antiquity. An archaeological reserve, excavations had unearthed two pre-historic skeletons of males and other artefacts. The site is revered by Buddhists and Muslims, with the presence of a temple and a mosque.

About Ratnapura District
Ratnapura is the provincial capital of Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka and the Ratnapura District in which the town is situated. Located some 101 km south east of Colombo, it is the centre of a long-established industry of precious stone mining including rubies, sapphires, and other gems. Apart from gem mining, the town is known for rice and fruit cultivations. Large plantations of tea and rubber surround the town. Tea grown in this region is called low-country tea. There is a well-established tourism industry in Ratnapura. Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Udawalawe National Park, Kitulgala, and Sri pada are especially popular among tourists.
Most of the large-scale gem businessmen of Sri Lanka operate from Ratnapura. The Rattnapura town depends on the gem trade. The town's agricultural industry is also well developed. Large plantations of tea and rubber surround the town. Although rice fields also used to be a common sight around the town, rice cultivation presently faces an uncertain future in Ratnapura because many farmers are giving up their rice cultivation and switching to gem mining which is a more productive way of earning money.

About Sabaragamuwa Province
The Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka contains two main cities called Ratnapura and Kegalle. At an elevation of approximately 500 feet above sea level, Ratnapura is the provincial capital of Sabargamuwa. It is 60 miles (100 km) from the main coastal city of Colombo. Province of Sabaragamuwa The gem-mining centre of Sri Lanka is also a major crossroad between southern plains and the hill country to the east.
In Sabaragamuwa province there is a route to Sri Pada from Ratnapura direction. Excursions include Sinharaja Forest Reserve and Udawalawe National Park. The route towards hill country is beautiful. The surrounding area is a popular trekking destination and a good place for bird watching.
